Details: The momiji is the classic Japanese maple so widely planted in North America. It's distinctiv, horizontal branching pattern, small size and deeply lobed leaves make it a favorite around the world. Like the azalea most varieties we have today are cultivars and hybrids of Acer palmatum and Acer japonicum. It's is a heavily bred species with 36 named varieties in 1710 and 202 by 1882.
