Details:This evergreen cherry tree grows in the warmest parts of Japan. Its exfoliating bark is bright rust-orange color and quite dramatic. It has leathery leaves 10-20 cm in length and white clusters of racemes in the fall. The name 'bakuchi', lit 'gambling' derives from the exfoliating bark which is shed each spring, similar to the clothes off ones back that can be lost in gambling.

There is a well-known bakuchi-no-ki at Senganen in Kagoshima.
