The word 'mitate' refers to the re-use of discarded objects in novel ways.
This important organization is working to preserve the traditional urban fabric of Kyoto. Their activities include demonstration rehab of a machiya, opening a teahouse, hosting cultural event to raise awareness, develop a Mitate Map, publishing, education, and cultural tours.
Kyoto Mitate International was founded in 1994 in Kyoto by a group of about thirty people, both Japanese and non-Japanese, who were concerned with the rapid loss of Kyoto's historical environment. Over the years since then, the number of members has grown to over two hundred. In the year 2000, the former name of our organization, International Society to Save Kyoto, was changed to Kyoto Mitate International.
