John Powell and David Slawson are teaching a hands-on workshop, "Fundamentals of Japanese Garden Design & Maintenance," May 28-30, at Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs, Arkansas. The 4-acre Garden of the Pine Wind, with water features created by David Slawson, was voted #15 in the Journal of Japanese Garden's 2004 national survey, first among new gardens added to the list. The workshop will be a unique opportunity for participants to learn the aesthetic pruning techniques utilized in Japanese-style gardens, as well as how plants are selected and placed to enhance the viewer's experience. Additional instruction will also cover selection and basics of setting stones in the garden and construction techniques for bamboo fences.
