Since 1995, the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific (HCP) has been developing the Takata Japanese Garden. Led by Bob Clarke, now the curator of the garden, HCP has continued to maintain and develop the garden through the help of volunteers. Recently, hCP agreed to an expansion of the Takata Garden by adding a karesansui dry garden a 40' x 60' plot on the site. However, lacking the $25,000 necessary to construct the garden, Bob Clarke set to work fundraising.
While not a professional fundraiser, Bob Clarke had quite a bit of experience designing and building Japanese gardens as well as editing and producing videos. So he hit on the idea of creating a video of the Japanese gardens, private and public, in Greater Victoria. The result is a one-hour video covering twenty-two of the region's gardens backed by an original score of Japanese music.
The video has been well-received by both viewers and the garden owners. For privacy reasons, none of the gardens are identified, but since many of the them are private, the viewer has a chance to see gardens that would normally never be open to the public.
The videos sell for C$30 each plus shipping and handling of C$6.00. To purchase a copy of te video, contact the HCP. Visa cards are accepted. To order send an e-mail to hcp.info@hcp.bc.ca. All proceeds will go to support the construction of the new karesansui garden.
