This U-C Berkeley-trained landscape architect also spent three years studing gardens at the University of Kyoto in the 1960's. His studies there led to the well-known 1980 guidebook, A Guide to the Gardens of Kyoto. His 10-person firm is currently engaged in planning and construction of thirty-six gardens including the massive 10-hectare Japanese-style garden of Larry Ellison, president of Oracle Corporation. His work is not necessarily in a Japanese-style, but is always creative, intriguing, and innovative. He has created more than four hundred full-scale garden designs in his thirty-five plus year career in landscape architecture. Recent work includes the Oracle Headquarters and the East Wing of the National Gallery in Washington DC. |
