DescriptionMr. Uesugi is Professor Emeritus at CSU, Pomona and President of Takeo Uesugi Associates. His landscape architecture practice focuses on Japanese gardens.

Mr. Uesugi was born in Osaka in 1940 and became a naturalized US citizen in 1989. He received a Ph.D. in Landscape Architecture from Kyoto University in 1981 and an MLA at the University of California, Berkeley in 1967. During his 33 years of practice in the United States, Mr. Uesugi has served the academic world as a professor at Cal Poly Pomona while also maintaining a private design and construction practice. His knowledge of Japanese gardens is attributed to the guidance of his mentor, Dr. Tadashi Kubo of University of Osaka Prefecture as well as Dr. Aya-akira Okasaki and Dr. Makoto Nakamura of Kyoto University. His practice has included experience from projects that include Mr. Uesugi's work in research and design has been awarded by various professions and institutions including ASLA, California Council of Landscape Architects, Japanese Institute of Landscape Architects, American Nurserymen Association, and San Diego Botanic Garden Society. He is currently working on a book, Poetic Gardens of East Asia, reflecting his interest in the relationship between poetry and gardens.
