DescriptionOccupied Kyoto in 1333 and imprisoned the Emperor. The Emperor escaped and fled south and set up a government in exile (later known as the Southern Court). Other members of the imperial family, however, collaborated with Takauji and one was installed as the new Emperor (of the Northern Court). While a violent and ruthless military leader, Takauji was also a patron of the Zen sect. Muso Soseki was his closes advisor and an important innovator in garden design. Saihoji and Tenryuji were both constructed under Takauji's patronage.
