Description
Considered a 'living treasure' by the Japanese government at the time of his death in the 1990's, Saito designed almost 400 gardens in Japan and overseas. With Wada Sadaji he also wrote several books including:
Magic of Trees and Stones: Secrets of Japanese Gardening
in 1964,
Designing Japanese Gardens
in 1961,
Quick and Easy Japanese Gardens
,
Japanese Gardening Hints
in 1969 and
Zukai Sakuteiki
in 1966.
One of his last designs in North America was the
Myo-wa-en
garden for Bonnie Teasdel. He is also remembered for a
karesansui
garden he designed for the United Nations building in New York City.
