The japanese garden waiting bench or machiai was originally developed as part of the tea ceremony as a space for guests to wait prior to entering the teahouse.

In the garden, it is also referred to as an azumayaand often functions as a space where people can sit to view their pond or garden or just to relax and contemplate.

This article by Jeff H. (Irving Texas) includes instructions and a material list for a very attractive machiai.
